Captain's Dream Log

So it's 3:40 am Tuesday November 24th.... What the hell am I doing with my life, I should be asleep. But my brain and body feel so wide awake, I feel like I could run a freaking marathon. I haven't dreamt in awhile or maybe I have, I just don't remember probably. I'm really ready for Thanksgiving, I finally get to sleep in and catch up on lots and lots of sleep debt. I am drowning in sleep debt right now... man if this keeps up, I'm going to look I'm forty by the time I'm twenty five years old. And really my sleeping habits have been utter complete sh*t these past few weeks. I'm just stressing over everything right now, it's terrible.

Captain's Readings

Our last readings for the semester end in a positive beautiful way. Chapter 5 of The Mystery of Sleep, talks about sleep in the Bible, and how God has used sleep and the night time to do many of his wonders. For example putting Adam to sleep so he can make Eve, and showing the stairway to Heaven to Jacob while he slept. God communicated with many prophets through dreams and showed visions to characters in the Bible while they slept. It is amazing that God can talk to us and show us things through dreams whenever he wants too. For this very reason alone, people should take sleep more seriously, including myself since it's 3 in the morning and I still can't fall asleep. But the point is that sleep can be a gateway to direct communication with God every single night.

Captain's Dream Log

As some final grades are being put into the grade book and finals are creeping in, that could only mean one thing... it's crunch time. This is the time of the year when I'm super stressed out and can't really get enough sleep and it's starting to get cold. My sleeping has been awful these past few days, I can't sleep... I just lay there in bed and cannot fall asleep. I have been falling asleep like at 2-3 in the morning these past few days and I don't know why? I'm trying to get my homework done in time so I can go to bed early, but sometimes it just seems like there is no finish line. I just can't wait for Thanksgiving break and Christmas break so I can relax for awhile and catch up on sleep.

Captain's Readings

We have been learning about the history of, especially sleep before electricity and sleep since caffeine. In Schmidt's Caffeine and the Coming of the Enlightenment, we see a progressive war on sleep as caffeine comes to a rise to make people more productive and forget about the value of sleep. Ever since the enlightenment, people have looked at sleep as being lazy and being unproductive, when in reality sleep is essential to our health and productivity during the day. Since the rise of caffeine, people have seen that sleep can be cut short by being more productive and doing more with burst of energy that comes from caffeine. It is crazy how us as a society have lost the value of a wonderful and natural gift that God has given us, and that it is essential for our well being.

Sleep We Have Lost Blog

Within time, sleep has turned into something that people just take for granted and our attitudes toward sleep now seems like it's just something that we have to do to get rest, it cuts from our productivity. Since electricity sleep has been one long block period. People don't cut the night into 2 halves anymore. Medicine and Religion have played a big part in our sleep, Ekrich writes about how people slept certain ways because they believed sleeping in a certain manner would give them better health or be healthier for the body. Some believed that a good night's rest was a way to cleanse and tranquil the soul. That God would communicate with us through our sleep and dreams.

Captain's Dream Log

So my nights have been ok I guess nothing really has happened, except for a weird crazy dream that I had last Friday. So yea I was at a Halloween party and I had this costume on that was just a mask, a plain white tee, and black jeans and black shoes. And I had an axe and I pretty much just went American psycho on people... it was great! No seriously it was like Grand Theft Auto except it just felt real and there was blood and gore and guts and total mutilation and people screaming and I was killing spree. And then I ended up at a different party with all this blood on me and people loved my costume and then the cops showed up trying to figure out who killed all those people in the other party and they never figured out that it was me. Because supposably I didn't do it and they took some other guy and yea I woke up after that and I was like woo! crazy.

Captain's Readings

As the semester winds down we are starting to look at articles that talk about sleep in the past before electricity. In Ekrich's Sleep We Have Lost, we looked at how people in past didn't sleep like we sleep today in modern society. People back then slept in two different periods you could say. First period was from 9 at night to 3 in the morning and the second period was from 4 in the morning to around 8 or 8:30 in the morning. It's crazy how people would get up in the middle of the night, I myself would never be able to do that I want to sleep through the whole night. Although it would be useful to when you have a big assignment due the next day, and still get enough sleep.
The Ekrich also explained the bedding, and not everyone had a nice comfortable mattress, only the rich had mattresses. It was only the rich people that really had a good night's rest, the poor never had a good rest from the conditions they slept in. It was pretty crazy to see how much sleep or the nocturnal life has changed over time all because of electricity.
